Bio
David A. Bonoma is a partner in the Chicago office of Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP, a national law firm that focuses on representation of government sector clients. David is admitted to practice law in Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota, as well as the Federal District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
David’s private sector career began at Phelan, Pope & John, Ltd. in 1988. He went on to work at Shefsky, Froelich & Devine, Ltd. and Greenburg Traurig, LLP, where he was a shareholder in the firm’s government group. In 2005, David left Greenberg to co-found his own government affairs and litigation firm, Reyes & Bonoma, Ltd.
In addition to his private sector experience, David has held several public sector positions. From 1997-2003, he was an Ass't State’s Attorney in Cook County where he served as Chief of Staff to Cook County State’s Attorney Richard A. Devine. During his 6-year tenure with the Office, David's duties included work at city, county and state levels of government, and regular testimony before the Cook County Board as well as state legislative committees in Springfield. His responsibilities included developing and overseeing significant office policies, including playing a key leadership role in drafting and leading efforts to pass the Juvenile Justice Reform Act of 1998, and work with the State’s Attorney’s Juvenile Competency Commission which examined how the juvenile system deals with very young offenders.
From 1997 through 2001,David served as a member of the Cook County Officers Electoral Board - a quasi-judicial body that decides election law cases relating to Congressional, Cook County and suburban offices. In 2010, he was appointed to the Illinois Employment Security Board of Review by former Governor Pat Quinn where he served until 2013. David also served as Director of External Affairs for Commonwealth Edison where he oversaw government relations with more than 200 cities across the north and west regions of ComEd’s service territory.
David’s professional honors include selection in 2002 as one of the Law Bulletin’s “40-Under-40”. He has also been designated an Illinois “Superlawyer” in the area of municipal law, and an Illinois Leading Lawyer in the area of government and municipal law. In 2003, David was selected to receive the prestigious Marshall Memorial Fellowship by the German Marshall Fund of the U.S.A.
David earned his undergraduate degree from Marquette University in 1985 and his J.D. from Loyola University of Chicago School of Law in 1988, where he received the Leadership and Service Award and the AmJur Award in constitutional law. He is a proud alum of St. Ignatius College Prep in Chicago.
David is a member of the Board of Directors of Maryville Academy, where he serves as Chair of Maryville’s Legal Affairs Committee. He has been married to Mary Kay Bonoma for more than 30 years, and has 4 wonderful daughters.
